"Health professionals agree that nutrition services are one of the first treatments that individuals should receive to improve conditions such as diabetes, heart disease and hypertension."(source the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, 2019)
Nutrition counseling is a continuous process between a patient and a health professional, most commonly a registered dietitian. You will be assessed by the dietitian based on your past and current nutritional health. The goal of nutrition counseling varies for every individual, whether they are in need of guidance for medical conditions such as diabetes and cardiovascular problems; losing weight; improving blood sugar levels, and maintaining weight. The dietitian discusses and guides you through the process of achieving your reasonable health goals in terms of diet, supplements and exercise.
Medical Nutrition Therapy (MNT)
DaNutri adopts the Medical Nutrition Therapy (MNT) approach to guide customers through lifestyle changes for reaching nutritional goals. According to the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, Medical Nutrition Therapy (MNT) is a specific application of the Nutrition Care Process in clinical settings that is focused on disease management. MNT involves in-depth individualized nutrition assessment and a duration and frequency of care using the Nutrition Care Process to manage disease.
Who will benefit?
Anyone can benefit from nutrition counseling. It is appropriate for all types of people; infants, adolescents, adults, older adults, and those who have medical conditions and diseases such as cardiovascular disease and diabetes. Those who seek nutrition counseling want to improve their nutritional health. By taking part in nutrition counseling you are one step closer to achieving your desired nutrition health goals.
Ask your doctor if a referral for nutrition counseling is right for you.
Scientific Background
Studies show that nutrition counseling has positive outcomes according to an article titled, ‘Patients report positive nutrition counseling outcomes by Schiller MR et al’. Out of the 400 patients referred for nutrition counseling, 88% reported that the dietitian’s advice was suited to their special need. Nutrition counseling is vital for the improvement of an individual’s diet and lifestyle.
What to Expect
You will first undergo an interview by our nutritionist /dietitian. As soon as information about your overall health is gathered and analyzed, our dietitian will give the best possible nutrition recommendations just for you. The initial visit takes approximately half an hour to one hour. After the first session, we will schedule follow-up appointments in 2-4 weeks. Follow-up visits are opportunities for you to report your progress towards goals and discuss any challenges you face. You are not alone during the journey of maximizing and improving your nutritional health. For any nutritional obstacles you may encounter, our dietitian is there to encourage and support you throughout your nutrition journey.
Insurance Coverage
Nutrition counseling with MNT is covered by a variety of insurance plans. "Under the Medicare Part B Program, you can receive nutrition services to help improve your health. Medicare Part B covers MNT for diabetes and kidney disease. You may be eligible for at least three hours of medical nutrition therapy services in the first year of care and two hours each additional year. If you have private insurance (such as through your employer), check with your insurance plan for specific MNT coverage details. Your plan may cover nutrition counseling for a wide variety of chronic conditions and health concerns, such as heart disease, diabetes and obesity".
